It happens to me as well, even though I have xz-utils installed.

What I did was clone his repository (https://github.com/vinceliuice/WhiteSur-icon-theme) and then installing by running the install.sh script.

$ git clone https://github.com/vinceliuice/WhiteSur-icon-theme.git
$ cd WhiteSur-icon-theme
$ ./install.sh

Hi Vinceliuice,
I still have 'flameshot' tray icon as colorful. Any idea I can fix it? Tried to clean up icon cache etc.
I'm using Gnome 3.36.5 (Manjaro)

I have tried all other icon themes and got same colorful tray icon for this flameshot.
Question: how an icon would be picked from an icon theme to replace the official app tray icon? by use icon name? what is the name convention or rule?

Some official app tray icon is buildin so it's not suggested to replace this icon

I think I asked question in wrong way. I was trying to fix Flameshot tray icon which I guess is not official tray icon. So in general: how can I fix the issue that some non-official tray icons not picking from icon theme?

But the problem is: for my case, you have added 'flameshot-tray.svg' and seems you can see the new tray icon, but I'm still seeing the colorful icon form the app itself. So there is no cache problem or similar? Is that possible that new version flame-shot is referencing different tray icon name?

It's showing the app icon not the tray icon about flameshot, so it's name is 'flameshot.svg'

so I do see you have added 'flameshot.svg' and a link 'flameshot-tray.svg' to it, but how come in my Gnome I'm still seeing colorful tray icon? Is that because the system expecting another name or my local some sort of cache?
